Final check
A garden chair stands on a soft lawn on four legs. With a person sitting on it, it pushes on the lawn with a force of 900 N. The lawn gives way under a pressure of more than 60 000 Pa. (a) Define pressure. (b) Calculate the smallest total area of the four legs, in cm², that stops the chair sinking in. (c) A heavier person sits on the same chair. State how the smallest safe area changes, and explain why.
define: give the precise meaning. calculate: work out the answer from the data. state: give a concise answer. explain: give reasons and connect them to evidence.

Pressure as force per unit area, p = F/A (1.8.1); how pressure varies with force and area in everyday examples (1.8.2); qualitatively, how the pressure beneath the surface of a liquid changes with depth and with the density of the liquid (1.8.3); Supplement: the change in pressure beneath the surface of a liquid, ∆p = ρg∆h (1.8.4). Atmospheric pressure beyond one sentence, hydraulics, upthrust and floating are not covered; gas pressure is in Gas pressure.
Apparatus, amounts and times in the experiment are illustrative. Real practical work follows a teacher-approved safety method.
