Recall and explain

Supplement. (a) What volume does one mole of a gas take up at r.t.p.? (b) One mole of hydrogen has a mass of 2 g and one mole of carbon dioxide 44 g. Explain why they take up the same volume at r.t.p.

state: give a concise answer. explain: give reasons and connect them to evidence.

Scope and sources

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 · 2026–2028 v2 · Original learning materials.

Moles in equations (3.3 Supplement 4, 5, 7 and 8): the molar gas volume of 24 dm³ at r.t.p., reacting masses, volumes of gases and volumes of solutions from equations, limiting reactants, percentage yield, composition by mass and purity, and empirical and molecular formulae. The mole, n = m/M and concentration are in the previous module; titration is left to topic 12.

Apparatus, amounts and times in the experiment are illustrative. Real practical work follows a teacher-approved safety method.
