Giant structures

•••
What this model shows

A glass cutter’s tip is a tiny diamond; here a small loose one stands in. It isn’t hammered: it’s too precious to break. The waits are shortened.

The magnifier shows a small part of each structure. Diamond and quartz are drawn as the reading draws them, a piece of a three-dimensional network with the four bonds of each atom pointing to the corners of a tetrahedron; graphite and copper are drawn flat. The atoms aren’t to scale, and their colours are only labels.

With reduced motion, each test finishes at once and the atoms in the magnifier stay still.

Select a piece of equipment, on the bench or here, to read about it in the card.
