Xylem, phloem and water uptake

What this model shows

How far the red reaches in each slice comes from a teaching model of typical results, not from real celery. Real stalks differ: the dye may climb faster or slower with warmth, light, the stalk and the dye. The model claims no speed for water in a plant.

The times run much faster than real time: 30 minutes, 2 hours and 6 hours each pass in a few seconds. The slices are cut at 4, 10 and 16 cm from the cut end of an 18 cm stalk.
