A ray of light passing from air into glass. Four lines are numbered: line 1 is horizontal, the boundary, with the glass shaded below it; line 2 is dashed and crosses line 1 at 90° where the ray meets it; line 3 comes down from the upper left through the air with an arrow pointing towards line 1; line 4 continues down into the glass with an arrow pointing away from line 1, closer to line 2 than line 3 is. Four angles are marked: w between line 3 and line 1, x between line 3 and line 2, y between line 2 and line 4, and z between line 4 and line 1.

7. describe

Put the steps in order to find the path of a ray of light through a triangular glass prism on a sheet of paper.

Write the number of each step in order.

  1. Aim the ray box along a line drawn at a measured angle to that normal, so that the ray enters there.
  2. Take the prism away, join the crosses and continue the line back to the outline of the prism.
  3. Draw around the prism, and draw a normal to the first side at the point where the ray will enter.
  4. Join the entry point to the exit point, draw the normal at the exit point, and measure the angles.
  5. Mark the ray that leaves the second side of the prism with two crosses, well apart.
